This ambitious exhibition included over 300 loaned objects highlighting the myriad of Asian influences on the evolution of western art in New York City and along the Pacific coast across decades, serving as a foundation to various major art movements. Many of the objects–experimental, innovative, and performative by nature–required creative design considerations, fabrication methods, or other accommodations for display. The artist Ann Hamilton created a dynamic site-specific installation where sliced sections of books traveled the entire length of the parapet by pulley and rail, pilling and collecting over time within the rotunda’s iconic, emptied fountain.
