Doug Wheeler: PSAD Synthetic Desert III
This acoustically abstracted version of the desert landscape was conceived of by the artist decades prior but never realized. While I was not able to see this project through to installation, in the beginning I worked closely with the artist to conceptualize and spatially investigate how to transform an enclosed, finite gallery into a completely immersive, isolated, “semi-anechoic chamber”, infinite in perception and experience. Also critical to the design process were considerations around staging visitor’s arrivals, onboarding, and circulation.
